The other day I went into a cell phone store to see a phone I was interested in purchasing. I consulted the salesman on the specifications of the phone and we chatted a bit on what sort of plan I would like. At the end of the conversation, the salesman asked what type of accent it is that I spoke with. This threw me off, because I don’t have an accent; I thought I was speaking like him. I don’t have any foreign relatives or influences in my childhood. My family does have a slight history of neurological/psychological disorders such as Brain Tumor, Depression/Social Anxiety, ADD, and Huntington’s Disease. It was a spur of the moment conversation, I understand, and social situations aren’t exactly my forte, but is there any speculation on this occurance? I was thinking very quickly during this conversation, but if that was the case wouldn’t it be noticable with others as well? Yet then again, people aren’t quick to point out another’s unique or odd behaviors…So I wonder if this has happened before.
I understand that the brain’s perspective tends to be highly subjective and many do not realize their behaviors during occurance. What is your speculation on a situation such as this? I thank you very much for your thoughts!
Wow, great answers guys! Any additional tips? It sure is wierd, isn’t it?
This happens with me from time to time. Sometimes people who talk fast can be confused with having an accent. Or people who just speak differently than others are confused with having an accent if the listener likes to come to conclusions without thinking about different causes. This is what I’ve come to understand at least haha
this same thing happens to me! It’s really frustrating because i don’t notice a difference in how i talk compared to everyone else, although actually now lately i really do because it’s been bothering me, and the more i worry about messing up how i talk the more it seems to happen. It happens mostly when I’m thinking or talking really fast. I think it has something to do with being nervous and thinking quicker than you can talk or talking faster than you should because you get ahead of yourself?
I have never thought about this. Thanks for posting this question. As of my reply, i think its just the mighty power of the brain that sometimes plays tricks on you.
